Lists. Not just of the item to be done, but the steps to complete the item.. and granular enough that there is no doubt what the next step is to complete. The next step part is VERY important because it should be something specific and actionable. Makes it harder to avoid when the path is paved. If the next step requires decisions or requires more than one actionable step, then it should be broken down further until you arrive at the next actionable step. And the next one after that. Etc. Harkens back to the Getting Things Done methodology.
use your favorite list format. I personally like mine online, but a paper book is perfectly serviceable if you know you'll use it.
