Diaspora, and Sgrouples, and Ello! Oh my!

So now I have three MORE places to update.. more than the original places I had before.

Exciting, I tell ya.

Diaspora, at least in my circles, suffers from lack of adoption. I think if it has existed 10-15 years ago, it would have a nice early geek adoption that would have led to it going interesting places by now. Today however...

Ello is cute, but really not done yet. Needs more time to bake. Too many things missing, too much lack of forethought on the interface, and while the adoption rate is skyrocketing, nobody seems to be really using it.

And Sgrouples... Interesting interface, and I think I might finally understand how it might work, but it seems kinda closed off for me. It does bill itself as the most secure social network there is, but there comes a point where swinging the pendulum to the other side doesn't really help matters any.

I find, increasingly, that I want to go back to DreamWidth (LJ variant). I can pay them for better services, they use that money for the site, and it links to LJ so I can update them both.

Free is a great thing, but free means we're at the whim of the site owners both in what they do to the site, and also what they do to raise money for it (up to and including selling off the floor beneath our feet).
I'd rather pay for a site that would take me seriously about the things I need and want, and know that I have a direct effect on how things are run.

The other fun part about this fuss is that it continues to go around. And around.. and Around... Not the first rodeo here. Everybody knows we want better, but it's a hassle to switch. A pain to double post. My curiosity is to see this time how many people are truly committed to leaving Facebook behind. Or if nothing else, segregating it to a place to put cross-posts in other places. Between games, calendaring/event planning, instant messaging, photo organization, subject promotion (when you pay), and of course micro-blogging, Facebook has established itself as the one-stop shop. The draw is undeniable. Demand is high.

Clearly.

If Facebook shut down tomorrow, what would you use instead for these services, and how would you convince folks to keep up the tribe across different parts? That's the kind of thinking we need today. The only way this works is if we treat Facebook as if it is gone TODAY.

Popular music for me is a funny thing. For as long as I can remember... as long as I've gotten to enjoy movies, popular music has taken an association to movie soundtracks. Music in movies is one of my favorite things, and it is no surprise that my favorite American composer scores movies. Along with scores are the tracks that get thrown in, either for ambiance, or effect, or sometimes there is a collaboration between artist and composer to write themes that make up a pop song but also lend to allusion and form of a score too.

One example I think of with that is Don Juan deMarco. Bryan Adams' "Have You Really Loved a Woman" gets torn apart and reconstituted into a really nifty score for the movie. It was written for the movie, and while the movie itself left a lot to be desired by many, I really enjoyed how the score developed.

In general though, score and added music live together but separately in a movie. And I find that those songs/tunes stick with me in their association to movies. Too many examples to count, but typically when I hear a song on the radio, particularly something from the 60's, 70's, and 80's, since most music collaborations go for established music, I know the movie where I heard it. Sometimes, the movies lead me to the music itself, and getting to broaden my tastes and my collections is one of my fun past times.

For example:

Playing By Heart - http://youtu.be/IJWlBfo5Oj0

Shawshank Redemption - http://youtu.be/CQ8ZHilxdm8

Scent of a Woman - http://youtu.be/A1oUeWzaLEE - though this one is in other movies too

Road House - http://youtu.be/CszwkG0ilXI

Ferris Bueller's Day Off - http://youtu.be/0m_giioppT4

So so many more. But you get the idea. :-)
