I've neglected this space so much that I always feel bad coming back.  That might not make a lot of sense, but sometimes my brain is like that. But hopefully I can get some long form  writing in now and then.

*waves* I still check DW fka LJ every few days (daily when my laptop's not frizzing out). Meanwhile, I'm leery of shifting to yet another social media platform.

Why Mastodon? I know at least one person who's chosen it to replace Twitter, but since I didn't really use Twitter (though still deleted my account a while ago), I'm not sure of its value. Do you feel Mastodon will replace DW/LJ for you, or possibly replace FB?
Anyway, thanks for the link to FAQ equivalent, as otherwise I felt I had nowhere to start.

Mastodon is short form. Similar to Twitter. Twitter is about all I use outside of this (though I can't say I really use it!). 86'd my facebook ages ago. Zuck can jump off a cliff, and he can take Elon with him.

Can't say what people will use it for besides a replacement for Twitter. It really depends if folks are interested in the short form. The one thing about Mastodon is that it is decentralized. Which comes with good and bad things, but you don't have an algorithm telling you what to look at, you don't have ads in your face, nobody is keeping track of what you look at or what you post. And because it is a fediverse, each instance is an island with its own rules and culture and the inclination to weed out certain types of content. You pick one with rules you like and your home space will be as you wish it to be. Then you can follow folks either on your instance or on other instances and they'll communicate between them so you can see what your friends post, and they can see what you post.

At any rate, lots of interesting folks out there.

Ah, thanks for the info. I never figured out how Twitter's short-form would/could work for me, so see no reason for bothering w/Mastodon. Hope it works out for you. I'd love to leave FB, but have a heck-of-a-time doing so. It'd probably be easier if'n I had my own blog where I could tell folks where to go. I mean, yeah, I DO have this here DW/LJ account, but I do not necessarily want to announce it to the FB world at large, which I suppose merits some thinking on and about to figure out what's up w/this thought/feeling.

Early deep Covid (serious lock-down), a friend invited me to join Discord. I follow several channels/threads/whatevers there, checking in every 1-4 days, and find it useful and interesting.
